English Premier League Gameweek Review

Here are the reviews of all the top weekend action that took place in the English Premier League-

Chelsea(1) vs Blackburn(0)-

The west Londoners finally tasted a victory after dismal performances in the last two gameweeks and also in the midweek champions league clash in Belgium. Under pressure Chelsea manager Andres Villas Boas gave starts to Florent Malouda and Daniel Sturridge and benched Didier Drogba against the side struggling at the bottom of the table. The visitors grabbed the lead in the 51th minute as Frank Lampard headed a low cross from the right flank by Ivanovic. It was only the second attempt at goal by chelsea. Earlier during the first half, Yakubu missed a sitter as he failed to score past an advancing Peter Cech, who ended up with a bleeding nose. Blackburn reacted well to Lampard’s goal as Yakubu and Hoilett’s attempted shots at the chelsea  goalpost were saved by an alert Cech. Villas Boas replaced an ineffective Malouda and brought in Fernando Torres in the hope of securing the win, but the Spaniard failed to score in an one-on-one situation with keeper Paul Robinson. Chelsea remain in the 4th position after the win and Blackburn lies deep down in the 19th position.

In an exciting match, termed by the City players as their toughest match this season so far, Manchester City held their nerves to win against a rejuvenated Queens Park Rangers. QPR became the first team to take up the lead against city by the virtue of Jay Bothroyd’s fine header in the 28th minute. Dzeko equalized for city just before the half time by courtesy of a fine goal. In the meanwhile QPR displayed brilliant passing game and Joe Hart had to be called into duty more than once to save efforts by Shaun Wright Phillips and Jamie Mackie. David gave city the lead in the 52nd minute, blasting past QPR custodian Kenny. City tried to slow down the tempo of the game for a while to protect their lead, which was soon cut to square by Helguson’s goal in the 69th minute. Manchester City looked destined to drop points when Yaya Toure scored the winner in the 74th minute by heading home Kolarov’s perfectly placed cross. The win keeps City’s 5 point lead at the top of the table intact, while QPR lie in the 11th position.

Tottenham Hotspur survived a Fulham fight-back to claim victory at Craven Cottage. Tottenham went ahead in the 10th minute. The visitors increased their lead in the stoppage time of the first half as Aaron Lennon outfoxed a couple of defenders inside the box before slotting home with the left foot. However Fulham made a fight of it and pulled one back on 57 minutes when Younes Kaboul diverted the ball into his own net.
