Burnley vs Tottenham: Spurs aim to rebound following cup disappointment

Tottenham will be looking to rebound following disappointment in the EFL Cup when they travel to face Burnley on Saturday. Ange Postecoglou’s men were beaten on penalties by Fulham during their midweek cup tie, meaning that that’s one trophy that will not be available for Spurs to win this season. However, things have gone a bit smoother so far in the Premier League, where, after a frustrating 2-2 draw with Brentford, they have since picked up back to back 2-0 wins over Manchester United and Bournemouth.

Tottenham managing well so far despite no Harry Kane

The departure of Harry Kane to Bayern Munich has left a huge hole in the side, but so far, Tottenham appear to be adjusting just fine. The visitors come into this match having avoided defeat in their last three away games and could potentially make it a fourth for the first time since August of last year. Currently in third place, it’s safe to assume that Spurs will be fancying their chances against a Burnley side who, despite being a force to be reckoned with in the Championship last season, have found adjusting to life in the top flight a lot harder than expected.

Currently managed by Manchester City icon Vincent Kompany, the Clarets are still seeking their first ever win in the Premier League. Despite beating Nottingham Forest 1-0 in the EFL Cup, Burnley have been unable to put up much of a fight in their opening two Premier League matches. They were thoroughly beaten 3-0 by Kompany’s former team Manchester City on matchday one, although, given the gulf between the two sides, it could have been a lot worse. After seeing their game against Luton Town postponed, Burnley did come into their second Premier League tie a bit more rested, but still were unable to do much as they were overrun by Aston Villa in a 3-1 defeat.

Burnley facing battle against history…plus are dealing with a huge injury list

Unfortunately for the hosts, things are not going to be easy – not by a long shot. Not only have they not won a Premier League game in nearly 18 months, but also have lost four of their last five meetings with Tottenham. However, Burnley did record an impressive 1-0 win over Tottenham in their most recent meeting, but are dealing with a huge injury list. In addition to both Michael Obafemi and Jordan Beyer, who were out with thigh and hamstring injuries respectively, Hjalmar Ekdal, Vitinho, and Aaron Ramsey are all major doubts after sustaining injuries during their 1-0 win over Nottingham in the EFL Cup.

Tottenham, for their part, may have to do without the services of Richarlison, who sustained an ankle injury during his team’s loss to Fulham midweek and will have to be evaluated before Saturday’s game.
