Greuther Fürth vs Bayern: Lewandowski to set another record?

Bayern’s Robert Lewandowski will be looking to achieve a new milestone when die Roten take on struggling Greuther Fürth on Friday. In a match that truly pits two teams with vastly contrasting fortunes against each other, it’s safe to say that the hosts will be really hoping to avoid the same fate Bochum suffered last round. In true Bayern fashion, the Bavarian titans showed the strugglers no mercy, putting seven past them sans reply to ensure they moved to top spot in the table.

Indeed, save for an opening day draw with Borussia Moenchengladbach, Bayern have been largely flawless. That doesn’t bode well for Stefan Leitl’s side, who are still seeking their first win of the season. This is Greuther Fürth’s second crack at the top flight, and suffice it to say, it hasn’t gone as well as planned. The hosts presently find themselves in 18th place and are already facing a relegation battle. And given how fellow strugglers Bochum were absolutely slaughtered last weekend, it’s safe to say that the hosts will not be welcoming Bayern’s visit one bit.

Meanwhile, Lewandowski will be again looking to add another record to his already glittering CV. Fresh off winning the European Golden Shoe, the 33-year-old continues to chase down Gerd Muller’s records. So far, he’s broken the 40-goal barrier, which had stood for nearly 50 years thanks to the late German icon’s exploits in the early 70’s. To top that off, his contributions during the 7-0 mauling of Bochum means he’s scored in 13 consecutive home games – bettering Muller’s record and then some, and will be looking to score in his 19th straight game across all comps – which will be four more than Muller achieved decades ago.

Bayern do have a Champions League tie coming up, but given that they’re playing Ukrainian minnows Dynamo Kiev in a match they should win without much fuss, Julian Naglesmann isn’t expected to rest Lewandowski here.

And one would be really remiss to bet against him scoring a goal – or two – as Bayern seek to start creating a gap between themselves and a high-flying Wolfsburg side, who are presently tied with them on points.
