Jamaica vs Brazil: Can Reggae Girlz continue amazing World Cup journey?

Just one game stands between Jamaica and a first ever appearance in the World Cup knockout rounds. Unfortunately for the Reggae Girlz, they will have to take on South American powerhouse Brazil to secure that coveted berth. When this group was announced, no one really expected Jamaica to be on the cusp of a round of 16 place, with many expecting it to be a close battle between France and Brazil.

Well, this World Cup has thrown up plenty of great surprises, and much to the joy of Jamaica’s fans worldwide, the Reggae Girlz have by far exceeded expectations and could further continue their historic run with a win on Tuesday. Four years ago, they made their first foray at the World Cup, only to be dumped out early after losing all three of their games. This time around, things have been going quite well for Lorne Donaldson’s team so far. They opened their World Cup campaign with a very impressive draw with European heavyweights France, before overpowering debutant side Panama 1-0 on matchday two.

The return of star striker Khadija Shaw, who missed out on the game against Panama due to suspension, couldn’t come at a better time for Jamaica. Although Brazil are the natural favorites in this match due to their experience at this level, the draw with France will be a huge boost for Jamaica’s confidence and they will certainly come into this contest with the firm belief that they can get the job done. A draw for the Reggae Girlz would see them over the line, while Brazil will need to win this game in order to avoid what would be a shock exit.

Things did start off well for the South American giants, who, despite their numerous appearances at World Cups, are still seeking their first ever title win. They cruised to a comfortable 4-0 win against Panama, with striker Ary Borges making history as the first Brazilian player to net a hat-trick on her debut; Borges also assisted the fourth goal to cap off a player of the match performance. However, things went wrong against France, where Brazil thought they’d done enough to secure a point after Debinha pulled them level, but a failure to mark the towering defender Wendie Renard came back to haunt them as she comfortably headed in France’s second to secure a 2-1 victory for Herve Renard’s squad.

In summary, Brazil will come into this contest knowing that it’s win or go home. Jamaica have already made history thanks to their win over Panama, but is the party only just getting started for the Reggae Girlz? After 90 minutes, we will certainly know the answer, with Group F’s two round of 16 entrants set to go down to the final matchday.
